History Of Saab
Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget or Saab started producing cars late in 1949. The first Saab, the 92 was a 2 stroke, two cylinder car developing just 25Bhp.
In December 1952 the Saab 92B was developed. The new model had new features over its predecessor most notably the boot was accessible from outside the car. Only 3 years later the Saab 93 was introduced and it was an extensively redesigned model with the new three cylinder 748cc engine.
After 10 years of manufacturing Saab broadened their product range by introducing the Saab 95 station wagon which was introduced in 1959. A few years later Saab introduced the Saab 96 and continued production with its 658Bhp V6 engine until 1980.
Saab broke into the sports car industry in 1966 with the Saab Sonett II. However it wasn’t long before criticism of the Sonett lines became increasingly consistent, so the Saab Sonett III was introduced. In total 10,219 units of the Saab Sonett II’s and III’s were built.
On November 22 1967 The Saab 99 was officially announced at a press conference in Stockholm. The 99 was long lived being manufactured from 1969 to 1984. The 99 lived on in the for of the Saab 90 which was basically a 99 with a 900 sedan rear up until 1987.
Saab Automobile AB is a Swedish automobile maker, now owned by General Motors. Until 1990 the company was owned by SAAB, an acronym for "Svenska aeroplanaktiebolaget" (The Swedish Aeroplane Company), which also included SAAB Aerospace and truck manufacturer Scania. General Motors bought half of Saab Automobile in 1990, with an option to acquire the entire company within a decade. Before exercising that option GM shared its ownership of Saab Automobile with Investor AB, the main owner of Saab.
Current models are the 9-3 and 9-5, both which are manufactured in Trollhättan, Sweden; the Saab 9-2X, which is manufactured in Japan; and the Saab 9-7X SUV, manufactured in the United States. In March 2005, it was announced that GM would move the production of the next-generation Saab 9-3 from Trollhättan to their Opel plant in Rüsselsheim, Germany
